U.S. Post Office and Courthouse

The Prescott Federal Building — combining the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse — was completed in 1931 and is one of the finer examples of Depression-era civic architecture in Arizona. The building is constructed of local granite in a stripped classical style, with restrained detailing that gives it a certain dignity without the heaviness of earlier federal architecture.

It sits on Gurley Street, a short walk from Courthouse Plaza, and is still in use as a working federal building. The exterior is freely viewable and the lobby, when open during business hours, has the kind of polished stone and brass fittings that characterized serious public construction in the 1930s. A small but satisfying stop for anyone interested in early 20th-century American architecture.
