Gourmet Ghetto (North Shattuck)

The stretch of Shattuck Avenue north of campus known as the Gourmet Ghetto — now officially rebranded "North Shattuck" but still universally called by the old name — is where California cuisine as a concept was born. Chez Panisse opened here in 1971. Peet's Coffee opened five years before that. The Cheese Board Collective has been making bread and selling cheese in cooperative fashion since 1967.

The neighbourhood is not a tourist attraction in any formal sense — it is just where people go to shop and eat, and has been doing this at an unusually high level for fifty years. Walking its few blocks gives you a sense of what Berkeley's food culture actually looks and tastes like: farmers' market quality, workers' cooperative ethics, and a general conviction that eating well is worth organising your life around.

The Cheese Board Pizza, a few doors down from the cheese shop, serves a single type of vegetarian pizza daily — whatever they feel like making — to a queue that runs down the block at lunchtime.

A story
Peet's Coffee, which opened on Vine Street in 1966, is the ancestor of the American specialty coffee movement. Alfred Peet trained many of the people who later founded Starbucks, and the darker-roast style he introduced — using international beans and short-rotating inventory — became the template for serious coffee throughout the United States.
