The traditional heart of student Berkeley, Telegraph Avenue runs south from the campus gate down to Dwight Way. Vintage clothing stores, independent bookshops, cafes, and street vendors line the strip. People's Park — a small block of contested ground that became a flashpoint in 1969 between students and Governor Ronald Reagan's National Guard — is one block east on Haste Street.
