Cambria

Central Coast village of Monterey pines, rocky beaches, folk-art oddities, and blufftop walks near San Simeon.

Cambria is a small Central Coast village where Monterey pines run down toward rocky coves and the Pacific does most of the talking. It sits on Highway 1 between Morro Bay and San Simeon, but it is more than a place to sleep before Hearst Castle. The town has its own rhythm: galleries and cafes inland, sea air along Moonstone Beach, and a few eccentric local landmarks that could only have happened in coastal California.

Moonstone Beach is the easy hook. The boardwalk follows the bluff above tide pools, driftwood, sea otters, and surf, with enough benches to make a sunset linger. South of town, Fiscalini Ranch Preserve gives Cambria a wilder edge, with open meadows, pine woods, and a bluff trail above the ocean.

Cambria's oddball side is Nitt Witt Ridge, a folk-art house built from stone, abalone shells, beer cans, and whatever else Art Beal could reuse. Add the nearby state park coastline and Cambria becomes a good one-day stop even for travelers who are already based elsewhere on the Central Coast.
