The Vogue Theater

The Vogue Theater is a 1946 Streamline Moderne cinema on Third Avenue in Chula Vista's historic downtown, a few blocks from the main commercial strip. The building retains its original curved facade and marquee frame, and has been a subject of preservation discussions for decades. It is one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings in the city.

The theater closed as a working cinema in the 1980s and has had various uses since. Its position on Third Avenue makes it part of any walk through the historic downtown corridor. It stands as a reminder of what postwar suburban California looked like before the era of the multiplex — a single neighborhood cinema that defined the cultural life of a growing community.

A story
The Vogue opened in 1946 as a single-screen neighborhood cinema and was designed in the Streamline Moderne style typical of postwar commercial architecture. It operated continuously as a movie theater into the 1980s before closing and falling into disrepair. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of a handful of mid-century commercial buildings in Chula Vista with formal historic recognition.
