Sierra City

Tiny Gold Country mountain town below the Sierra Buttes and the Pacific Crest Trail.

Sierra City is a tiny old mining town on Highway 49, tucked into the North Yuba River canyon below the jagged Sierra Buttes. It began in the Gold Rush, shrank hard after the mines faded, and now survives as a mountain stop for hikers, anglers, and people driving the northern end of California's Gold Country.

The town itself is small, but the setting is strong. The Kentucky Mine Historic Park and Museum preserves the mining story with a stamp mill and summer tours. Just out of town, the Pacific Crest Trail to Loves Falls gives an easy taste of the long trail, while the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout is the hard, spectacular objective.

This is not a polished resort town. That is the point. Sierra City is best for travellers who like old wooden storefronts, mining remains, cold river water, and steep trails that start almost immediately outside town.
