Brushy Peak Regional Preserve protects the open hills north of Livermore, where grassland, oak, and rocky outcrops give way to wide views over the valley. It is one of the better places to understand Livermore as more than a wine town.
The preserve is best in the cool season or early in the day, when the hills are greener and the sun is less punishing. Trails are exposed, but the sense of space is excellent, especially if you want a half-day walk close to town.
