Castello di Amorosa

Recreated 13th-century Tuscan castle housing a winery

The Castello di Amorosa, completed in 2007 by owner Dario Sattui, is a faithful recreation of a thirteenth-century Tuscan castle — 121 rooms across eight levels, including a great hall with frescoes, a torture chamber, a chapel with Romanesque vaulting, and a working drawbridge. The construction used Italian hand-tools and imported materials wherever possible.

Beneath the castle is a working winery, with tastings of its Italian-style wines included in the entry ticket. The experience is unapologetically theatrical and gloriously over-the-top — the Napa Valley's most ridiculous attraction and, on its own terms, one of its most enjoyable. North of St. Helena on Highway 29.
