Temescal

The neighbourhood around Telegraph Avenue between 40th and 51st streets, which has become the centre of Oakland's food scene over the past decade. The density of independent restaurants along this stretch is exceptional — Ethiopian, Korean, Mexican, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, and New American, concentrated in a walkable corridor with few chains. The Temescal Alley, a pedestrian passage off 49th Street, holds small boutiques and cafes.

The neighbourhood has a strong local character and is a good place to spend an evening walking and eating rather than following a fixed itinerary. Blue Bottle Coffee opened its first location here. The farmers' market on Sundays draws people from across the East Bay.
