The entertainment and arts district centred on Telegraph Avenue and Broadway, north of downtown Oakland. This is where you will find the Paramount Theatre and most of the city's live music venues, cocktail bars, and converted warehouse spaces. Several large murals cover building facades on Telegraph, and the density of things to do per block is higher here than anywhere else in the city.
Uptown fills up on weekend evenings and for big shows at the Fox Theater and Paramount. Weekday evenings are quieter but the bars are still active. The neighbourhood has changed significantly over the past decade as artists and musicians displaced from San Francisco settled here — the character is still genuinely mixed and the energy is its own.
