Technically in neighboring San Marino, but universally considered a Pasadena institution. The Huntington combines a world-class rare book library, an exceptional art collection — Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" lives here — and 120 acres of themed botanical gardens. The Chinese Garden and the Desert Garden are both stunning. You could spend an entire day here and still not see everything. Timed-entry tickets are required; book ahead, especially on weekends.

A story
The Huntington owns one of only twelve surviving vellum copies of the Gutenberg Bible, printed around 1455. It also holds a first folio of Shakespeare and the manuscript of Thoreau's Walden.
