Sutter Home Winery

A large family-owned winery on Highway 29 just south of town, best known as the inventor of White Zinfandel — a sweet pink wine that for two decades was the best-selling varietal in the United States. The estate is the original 1874 Thomann Winery property, with the historic Victorian house and the rose-filled front gardens open to visitors.

The tasting room pours the full Sutter Home line, which is squarely commercial in style and priced for it. The garden, with thousands of rose bushes in summer, is what most visitors stop for. Useful as a quick free stop on a winery-hopping day; not a destination tasting.

A story
In 1972, Sutter Home winemaker Bob Trinchero noticed a batch of his Zinfandel had stuck partway through fermentation, leaving residual sugar in a pink wine. He bottled it anyway, called it White Zinfandel, and accidentally invented the best-selling wine style in late-20th-century America.
