Libby's Fruit Cocktail Water Tower

A 100-foot water tower painted to look like a giant can of Libby's Fruit Cocktail, the unmistakable landmark of an otherwise unremarkable Sunnyvale shopping plaza. It is one of the very few visible reminders that this part of Silicon Valley spent most of the twentieth century as fruit-canning country.

The tower stands in a private parking lot but is fully visible from California Avenue. Best photographed in the late afternoon when the western sun lights up the painted label. A handful of orchards have been restored as memorial parks in the area but this is the most charismatic survivor of the era.

A story
The Libby, McNeill & Libby cannery on the corner of California and Wolfe was the largest cannery in the world when it opened in 1907, packing apricots, pears, and the company's signature fruit cocktail. The cannery was demolished in 1985; the city kept the water tower as a landmark on the condition that it remained painted in the original fruit-cocktail label.
