Monument

Colorado Front Range town on the Palmer Divide, with pine forests and a mountain-town feel.

Monument sits on the Palmer Divide, the high ridge separating the South Platte and Arkansas River watersheds, roughly halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs along I-25. At nearly 7,000 feet, it is one of the higher towns along the Front Range corridor, and the surrounding Ponderosa pine forests give it a distinctly mountain-town feel despite being just minutes from the interstate.

The small downtown along Second and Front Streets has a handful of local restaurants and shops. Monument Lake sits at the south end of town with a flat path round the water, and Limbach Park hosts the summer concert series. For a bigger outing, the rough road and trail up Mount Herman climbs into the Rampart Range and ends at a summit with views across the plains to Pikes Peak.

Most visitors pass through Monument on the way to somewhere else, but it works well as a quiet base if you want easy access to both Denver and Colorado Springs without staying in either city.

Things to Do

Monument is small and most of what there is to do is outdoors. The lake in town is the easy option; for anything longer, head west into the Rampart Range or south to Pike National Forest. The historic downtown is worth a short walk but won't fill more than an hour.
