Hartford's gilded State Capitol, completed in 1878, is one of the most ornate capitol buildings in the country. Designed by Richard Upjohn in High Victorian Gothic style, it rises above Bushnell Park with a dome covered in genuine gold leaf. Free guided tours take visitors through the legislative chambers, the Hall of Flags — displaying battle flags from Connecticut's Civil War regiments — and the governor's suite. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
