Elizabeth Park contains one of the oldest municipal rose gardens in the United States, established in 1904. In peak season — typically the third week of June — some 15,000 rose plants in 800 varieties are in bloom across the formal garden beds. It is a genuine spectacle, and free to visit. The broader park, spanning 100 acres on the Hartford-West Hartford border, has greenhouses, a pond, tennis courts, and wooded paths that are pleasant year-round.
