Old Swedes Church (Holy Trinity)

Old Swedes Church, formally Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, is the oldest church building in the United States in continuous use since its 1699 consecration. The stone walls and the steep pitched roof reflect the Swedish-American settlers who built it — the spire was added later. The graveyard around it is full of seventeenth and eighteenth-century stones in Swedish, English, and Latin.

The Hendrickson House next to the church, moved here from a Swedish farmstead, is one of the oldest surviving Swedish-American homes in the country. Both buildings are open to visit. The site sits in the Wilmington Riverside neighbourhood, walking distance from the Riverfront.

A story
The Swedes founded New Sweden in 1638 at what is now Wilmington — a colony that lasted only 17 years before the Dutch took it. The church, consecrated in 1699, is the oldest still standing in the US that has been in continuous use since its founding. The Swedes left, but the church kept going under English, then American congregations.
