Riverwalk

Riverwalk is a 1.5-mile promenade along the north and south banks of the New River through downtown Fort Lauderdale. It links the Museum of Discovery and Science on the west end to Las Olas Boulevard on the east, passing Stranahan House, the History Center, Esplanade Park, and a string of outdoor restaurants and cafés along the way. The path is flat, wide, and lined with benches and shade trees — good for an early morning walk before the heat settles in.

In the evenings Riverwalk becomes a social space: dog walkers, joggers, couples at the waterfront restaurants, and the occasional live performer at one of the pavilions. The water taxi stops here, so you can walk one direction and ride back, or string together a loop that takes in both banks. The view west toward the Intracoastal from the middle of the river bridges shows you a slice of old Florida that the canal-front mansions to the north and east have not yet completely covered over.

A story
The New River was the reason Fort Lauderdale existed at all — it was navigable, freshwater, and close to the Everglades, which made it the first natural highway into the interior. The Seminole people used it for centuries before Frank Stranahan set up his ferry crossing here in 1892.
