Milton, Florida

Florida Panhandle river town used as a base for Blackwater paddling, trails, and pine forest

Milton sits on the Blackwater River in the western Florida Panhandle, close enough to Pensacola to be overlooked and far enough inland to feel different. The town itself is small, with a historic riverfront and a few old brick buildings, but the real reason to come is the water and forest just north of town.

The Blackwater River is clear, tea-coloured, and lined with white sandbars. Canoe, kayak, and tubing trips run through Blackwater River State Park and the larger state forest, while the Blackwater Heritage State Trail starts near downtown and gives cyclists a flat, easy route out of town.

Milton is not a resort town, and that helps. It works best as a practical base for a day outside: paddle in the morning, stop at Arcadia Mill to understand the old timber economy, then eat near the river before heading back toward the coast.
