The Jacksonville Beaches — Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach — have some of the most consistent surf in Florida, particularly in the autumn months when tropical systems push swells up the coast. The break is beach break throughout, with waves generally in the 1–4 foot range. It is not Oahu, but it is real surf, and the local surfing culture is genuine rather than affected.
Sunrise Surf Shop in Atlantic Beach is the oldest surf shop in Florida and the social hub of the local surf community. Sun Diego and other shops rent boards and equipment and offer lessons. The best surf is typically at dawn before the onshore winds pick up. Surfers share the water with swimmers — there are designated surfing zones during beach hours.
