Everglades Club

The Everglades Club is Palm Beach's oldest and most exclusive private social club, founded in 1919 and occupying a Mizner-designed building on Worth Avenue near the Lake Worth Lagoon. It is closed to non-members and non-guests, but the building's exterior — a long, low Moorish-influenced facade with projecting balconies and a red tile roof — is visible from the street and is one of the finer examples of Mizner's early work in Palm Beach.

The club gained a certain notoriety for maintaining an exclusionary membership policy that effectively barred Jewish members for most of the 20th century, which directly contributed to the founding of several alternative clubs in Palm Beach by Jewish families who were refused entry. The story is part of the social history of the town — a town whose apparent uniformity conceals a considerable amount of internal hierarchy and exclusion. The club now has a more open policy, though membership remains invitation-only and very restricted.
