Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

The brick-red Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse has guided ships through the inlet since 1860, making it one of the oldest structures in Palm Beach County. At 105 feet, it offers a commanding view of the inlet, the Loxahatchee River mouth, and the Atlantic — on a clear day you can trace the coast north past Hobe Sound. Tours climb the 105 steps to the lantern room and include the keeper's cottage below, which is preserved much as it was in the late 19th century.

The lighthouse sits within a small archaeological park that preserves the site of a Tequesta people's village dating back roughly a thousand years. The Loxahatchee River Historical Society runs the site and has a small but worthwhile museum at the base.

A story
The lighthouse was designed by George Meade — the same Union general who defeated Lee at Gettysburg two years later. Construction was plagued by Seminole raids and supply shortages, and the project took nearly a decade from survey to first light in 1860.
