Loxahatchee River Kayaking

The Loxahatchee is Florida's only federally designated Wild and Scenic River, and paddling it is the best reason to visit Tequesta. The upper stretch winds through a dense subtropical forest of cypress, cabbage palm, and strangler fig, with tannin-dark water that turns the river the colour of tea. Manatees are common in cooler months, river otters visible year-round, and bald eagles nest along the banks. Several outfitters near the Tequesta area rent kayaks and canoes, and guided trips run from Jonathan Dickinson State Park upstream.

The river is calm and suitable for beginners, though the lower section near the inlet gets tidal boat traffic. Early morning starts give you the best wildlife sightings and the coolest temperatures.
