Tequesta's position at the northern edge of Palm Beach County makes it a good base for exploring a wide range of South Florida environments. Jupiter immediately to the south has the lighthouse, the waterfront dining strip, and easy beach access without the pretension of the communities further south. West Palm Beach (about 40 minutes south on I-95) is the county's main city — worthwhile for the Norton Museum of Art, City Place, and the CityPlace district. Palm Beach Island sits just off the coast opposite West Palm, famous for its Gilded Age mansions, Worth Avenue shopping, and the Henry Flagler Museum in Whitehall, a remarkable monument to Florida's railroad-era boom.
For a longer drive, Lake Okeechobee — the vast shallow lake at the heart of the Florida peninsula — is roughly two hours west on US-98 and SR-80. The lake itself is ringed by a dike and not visually dramatic, but the bass fishing is legendary and the surrounding communities offer a glimpse of a Florida entirely different from the coastal strip.
