A modestly sized but high-quality museum on the campus of Emory University in northeast Atlanta, with strong permanent collections of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Near Eastern, and pre-Columbian American art. The Michael Graves-designed building, opened in 1993, is itself a small architectural landmark.
The Egyptian collection is the standout — it includes nine mummies, several of which were the centre of a 2003 dispute with the Egyptian government over a likely-stolen Ramses I mummy that the museum returned. Free admission for Emory affiliates; small fee otherwise.
