Norcross is a small city in Gwinnett County, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. It sits in the middle of metro Atlanta's sprawling suburbs but has managed to keep a distinct identity, centered on a compact historic downtown with tree-lined streets, Victorian-era buildings, and a town green that hosts community events throughout the year.
The historic district is walkable and pleasant, with a handful of restaurants, antique shops, and the Lionheart Theatre Company, a well-regarded community theater. The real culinary action, though, is on the Buford Highway food corridor nearby — this stretch of suburban road is one of the most diverse food destinations in the Southeast, with excellent Vietnamese pho shops, Korean barbecue, Mexican taquerias, and Salvadoran pupuserias side by side in strip malls.
Norcross is not a tourist destination in the traditional sense, but if you are in the Atlanta area and want to eat well without downtown prices, or if you want to see what a thriving multicultural American suburb actually looks like, it is worth the trip. The town also sits near several Gwinnett County parks with good walking trails, and the Southeastern Railway Museum in nearby Duluth has an interesting collection of vintage locomotives and railcars.
