Battle of Bloody Marsh

A short distance south of the village, a small interpretive site marks the place where, on 7 July 1742, a British force under Oglethorpe ambushed a much larger Spanish detachment from Florida and effectively decided the future of the Georgia colony. The site is small — really just a marker, a few panels, and a view of the marsh — but it is one of the few easily visited Spanish-British battlefields in the American South.

The marsh itself, especially in late afternoon light, is the more lasting impression. The interpretive site is managed by Fort Frederica National Monument; the visit can be combined with a stop at the fort to the north, and the views of the marsh are part of the attraction.
