Vidalia is a small city in southeast Georgia best known as the home of the Vidalia sweet onion — Georgia's official state vegetable. The onion's unusual sweetness comes from the low sulfur content of the local soil, and by federal law, only onions grown in a designated 20-county area can use the name.
The city hosts an annual Vidalia Onion Festival each spring (late April), with cooking contests, live music, and arts and crafts. The Vidalia Onion Museum explains the science and history behind the crop. Worth a stop if you're passing through on US 280 between Macon and Savannah.
