Idaho Falls is the main city of eastern Idaho, set around a bend of the Snake River rather than around a postcard downtown. It is often treated as a practical stop on the way to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, or Jackson, but the city has enough of its own texture to reward a half day or more.
The river is the point. The Idaho Falls River Walk follows both banks past the falls, parks, public art, and the Japanese Friendship Garden. A few blocks east, the Museum of Idaho gives the city a stronger cultural anchor than you might expect from a highway map.
Idaho Falls still feels like a regional service centre, and that is part of its honesty. Travelers get good road access, a useful airport, a walkable riverfront, and a base for the big volcanic, desert, and mountain landscapes of eastern Idaho.
