Tetonia

Tiny farming community in Idaho's Teton Valley, with wide-open views of the jagged Teton Range.

Tetonia is a tiny farming community at the northern end of Teton Valley, Idaho, with a population of around 250. It has almost nothing in the way of tourist infrastructure — no restaurants to speak of, no gas station — but the views of the Teton Range from here are among the best anywhere. On a clear day the jagged peaks dominate the entire eastern horizon, rising abruptly from the valley floor, and the foreground of grain fields and hay meadows makes for stunning photography.

The town sits at the quieter end of the valley, well away from the growing tourist activity around Driggs and Victor to the south. The Teton Scenic Byway (Highway 33) runs through town, and the Teton River meanders through the farmland nearby — it is a good fly-fishing stream, particularly for cutthroat trout. In winter, the valley fills with snow and the Grand Targhee Resort, accessed from Driggs, offers some of the deepest powder skiing in the Rockies.

Tetonia is more of a place you pass through than a destination, but if you are exploring Teton Valley, it is worth driving up here for the views alone. The light in the late afternoon, with the sun dropping behind the Big Hole Mountains to the west and lighting up the Tetons to the east, is exceptional.
