McAlpine Locks and Dam is the modern riverworks that replaced the old navigation obstacle at the Falls of the Ohio. The rapids shaped Louisville's early growth because boats had to stop, unload, or wait before continuing downriver. Today the locks are a practical piece of infrastructure, but they are also a good stop for understanding why the city developed where it did.
