Mansfield is a small northwest Louisiana town whose travel interest is tightly focused on history. It is not a broad destination, but Civil War travellers and anyone tracing the Red River Campaign will find one of Louisiana's more important battlefield sites just outside town.
The Mansfield State Historic Site interprets the 1864 Battle of Mansfield with a museum, trails, and living-history events. In town, the Mansfield Female College Museum adds a different story: women's education in antebellum Louisiana, with the college buildings later used as Civil War hospitals.
For most travellers, Mansfield is a purposeful stop rather than a place to linger. Give it a half-day if the history matters to you, then continue toward Shreveport or the backroads of western Louisiana.
