Abbe Museum

A small, focused museum on the history and present of the Wabanaki — the Mi'kmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot peoples whose territory includes Mount Desert Island. The collection ranges from 10,000-year-old stone tools to contemporary basketry and beadwork.

The building itself is striking — a 2001 contemporary structure on Mount Desert Street with a curving zinc-clad facade. Plan an hour. There is also an older Abbe outpost at Sieur de Monts Spring inside Acadia National Park, open in summer only. 26 Mount Desert Street; closed January through May.

A story
The Abbe was the first museum in the United States to formally adopt a decolonising mission statement, redesigning its exhibits with the four Wabanaki nations as co-curators rather than subjects.
