Criterion Theatre

A 1932 Art Deco theatre on Cottage Street, recently restored, still operating with films, live music, and stage shows. The interior is the draw — geometric plaster, the original chandelier, and a cantilevered balcony that hangs over the orchestra without a single post in the way.

Worth checking the calendar even if you have no plans for a show; the building survives largely because tickets keep selling. 35 Cottage Street.

A story
Built in 1932 in fast-fading Art Deco style by a single local entrepreneur, the Criterion is one of very few small-town American theatres still operating from a 1930s configuration — including its floating balcony, suspended without supporting columns.
