Shore Path

A flat gravel path that runs from Agamont Park, behind the Bar Harbor Inn, around the rocky shoreline to Wayman Lane. It is just under a mile each way, takes about half an hour at a stroll, and gives the best free view in town: Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, and on a clear day Schoodic Peninsula across the water.

The path passes the back gardens of the grand summer cottages that survived the 1947 fire. There are benches at intervals, and a small public swimming spot near the start. Early morning is best — sunrise over the islands is what the painters who summered here came to see.

A story
The path was laid out in 1880 as a private walkway by the wealthy summer residents whose cottages lined the shore. They preserved public access in their deeds, which is why a millionaire's lawn is still legally walkable today.
