International Cryptozoology Museum

A wonderfully earnest small museum in the West Bayside neighbourhood — the only one of its kind anywhere. The collection covers Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, mermaids, the Mongolian death worm, and a long list of regional cryptids including the Maine state cryptid Wessie, a giant snake of the Presumpscot River.

Tickets are cheap, the exhibits are densely packed, and the gift shop is half the fun. Ninety minutes is about right. Closed Tuesdays.

A story
The world's only museum of cryptozoology — the study of animals whose existence is not yet confirmed by science. The collection includes plaster casts of Bigfoot tracks, a life-size eight-foot Sasquatch figure, hair samples, and yeti scat. Founder Loren Coleman has been a cryptozoologist for more than half a century and is usually on site to talk shop.
