Victoria Mansion

A grand brownstone Italianate villa from the eve of the Civil War, miraculously preserved with more than ninety percent of its original interior. The painted rooms, gilded plasterwork, and Tiffany-style stained glass make it the most opulent house museum in northern New England.

Open seasonally May through October, plus a celebrated Christmas season in December when the rooms are decorated to a different theme each year. Tours run hourly; 109 Danforth Street.

A story
Built between 1858 and 1860 as the summer home of a New Orleans hotelier who had grown up in Portland, the Victoria Mansion (also known as the Morse-Libby House) is one of the most lavish surviving Italianate villas in America. Almost every interior feature is original — gas lighting, frescoes by Italian-born painter Giuseppe Guidicini, carved black walnut, stained glass — because the family kept the house essentially unchanged through to the 1940s.
