Umbrella Cover Museum

On Peaks Island, a twenty-minute ferry ride from the Old Port, sits the world's only museum dedicated to the fabric sheaths that come with umbrellas. The tour is short, the proprietor is delightful, and the whole experience is exactly as strange as it sounds.

Open Friday through Monday in summer, by appointment otherwise. Combine with lunch and a bike ride around Peaks Island for one of the more characterful afternoons available in Portland.

A story
Nancy 3. Hoffman — the digit is part of her legal name — opened the world's only umbrella cover museum in her cottage on Peaks Island in 1996. The collection holds more than seven hundred sleeves from forty-two countries; tours include a singalong on her accordion. The museum was officially recognised by Guinness World Records in 2012.
