Maine Lobsterman Statue

A life-size bronze of a Maine lobsterman at work sits on the small triangular Harbor Fish Market plaza at the foot of Pearl and Commercial Streets. It is one of the smaller monuments in Portland but easily the most representative of what the city has historically lived from.

Two minutes to look at; thirty seconds to find. Pair with a walk down to the wharves and a stop at one of the Commercial Street oyster bars.

A story
The bronze figure of a lobsterman pegging a lobster's claw was sculpted by Victor Kahill of Portland in 1939 for the Maine pavilion at the New York World's Fair. The original plaster was lost; the bronze you see was cast in 1977 from Kahill's surviving studies. Identical casts stand in Bailey Island, Maine, and in Washington, DC.
