Jackson Amtrak Station

Oldest continuously operating railroad station in the United States

The Jackson Amtrak station is a single-storey granite and red-brick building on Michigan Avenue, with a long platform canopy and a square clock tower. It is still in regular use — three Amtrak Wolverine trains in each direction stop here every day — and the waiting room retains much of its original woodwork.

The station is a National Historic Landmark. A small heritage display in the lobby covers the history of the Michigan Central Railroad in Jackson, including the founding of the company's shops here in 1842.

A story
Built by the Michigan Central in 1873, the granite and brick depot has been in continuous operation as a passenger station longer than any other in the country. Jackson was the company's headquarters and its main locomotive-repair yard — at its peak the railroad employed more than 6,000 people in the city.
