Silver City is an old mining town in southwest New Mexico, set below the Pinos Altos Range and close to the edge of the Gila Wilderness. It has enough life of its own to be more than a supply stop: a compact historic centre, galleries, a university, and a local habit of turning rough edges into art.
The town's best days mix two moods. Spend the morning on the Boston Hill trails, where old mine ground has become walking country with broad views over town. Then drift through Bullard Street and Broadway for brick storefronts, murals, cafes, and the Silver City Museum.
Silver City is also the practical base for the long road north to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. That trip is not casual, but it is the reason many travelers remember the area: forested mountains, hot springs country, and Mogollon cliff homes far from the interstate map.
