Big Sky

Montana mountain resort community below Lone Mountain, known for skiing, hiking, and Yellowstone country.

Big Sky is a mountain resort community between Bozeman and the northwest edge of Yellowstone National Park. It began as ranch country, became a ski hill in the 1970s, and has grown into one of Montana's main year-round outdoor bases.

The obvious winter anchor is Big Sky Resort, spread across the slopes of Lone Mountain and neighbouring terrain. In summer, the place becomes a hiking and fishing base: Ousel Falls is the easy local walk, while Beehive Basin gives you alpine meadows, a cirque lake, and big views of Lone Peak.

Big Sky is expensive and resort-shaped, so it is not the place to look for old Montana grit. Still, it earns its page. Few mountain towns put serious skiing, strong summer trails, Gallatin River country, and Yellowstone access this close together.
