Hyalite Canyon

Hyalite Canyon runs south from Bozeman into the Gallatin National Forest, offering year-round outdoor recreation within 20 minutes of downtown. In summer, dozens of hiking trails fan out from the canyon road: short walks to Palisade Falls, longer routes to the alpine lakes above timberline, and the Hyalite Peak trail to a 10,000-foot summit with views across the Gallatin Range.

In winter the canyon becomes an ice-climbing destination of international reputation. The Hyalite drainages produce some of the most reliable and accessible ice routes in North America, and ice climbers visit from across the country and abroad. A trail system also offers fat-biking and cross-country skiing once the snow arrives.

Palisade Falls is the easiest walk — a 1-mile round trip to a dramatic 80-foot waterfall, suitable for all fitness levels. Start from the Hyalite Reservoir parking area and follow the signs.

A story
Hyalite Reservoir was built in 1948 to supply water to Bozeman. The canyon above it was developed as a recreation area in the following decades, and it now draws more than 300,000 visitors a year — making it one of the busiest pieces of national forest anywhere in Montana, despite being almost entirely unknown outside the region.
