Main Street

Bozeman's Main Street is the most functional and genuinely pleasant downtown of any Montana city. A compact stretch of ten or twelve blocks holds independent bookshops, outdoor gear stores, coffee shops, breweries, and restaurants without the gimmickry that overtakes many Western tourist towns. The mix of old brick commercial buildings and new infill gives it a density and life that is unusual for a city of this size.

The historic district centres on the blocks between 3rd and 9th Avenues West. Vargo's Jazz City & Books, Country Bookshelf (one of Montana's best independent bookstores), and a string of outdoor shops oriented toward climbing, skiing, and fly fishing reflect the city's character. In summer, musicians play on the sidewalks in the early evening.

Parking is straightforward outside of summer weekends. The street is very walkable and there is no need for a car once you are there.
