Omaha's art museum sits in a pink Georgia marble Art Deco building completed in 1931, one of the most striking buildings in the city. The permanent collection is strongest in 19th-century American art, European Old Masters, and Native American material from the Upper Missouri — the Bodmer watercolors are exceptional. The modern and contemporary galleries occupy a 2004 expansion by Sir Norman Foster.

General admission is free on Saturdays. The museum café is a pleasant lunch stop if you're spending time in the Midtown neighbourhood.

A story
The Joslyn's collection includes Karl Bodmer's watercolors made during the 1832–34 Prince Maximilian expedition up the Missouri River — the most accurate visual record of the American West and its peoples before their world changed forever. Bodmer met Mandan, Hidatsa, and Blackfoot people who had never seen a European artist.
