Old Market

Historic warehouse district, the liveliest corner of downtown

The Old Market is Omaha's most walkable neighbourhood, occupying a grid of 19th-century warehouse buildings on the northeastern edge of downtown. The cobblestone streets and red-brick facades give it a character that the rest of the city lacks, and it has the densest concentration of independent restaurants, bars, galleries, and boutiques anywhere in Nebraska.

The district centres on Howard Street and 11th Street, where the original commission houses that served the Union Stockyards once dominated. Today you find a converted market house with food vendors, several good restaurants, live music venues, and a handful of bookshops and craft stores. On summer evenings the streets fill up and there is a street musician on most corners. The Market also borders the riverfront, a short walk east to the Gene Leahy Mall and the Missouri River.
