The 92-foot-tall Redstone rocket replica stands outside the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center and is visible from Interstate 93 — a startling sight when you first see it rising out of a quiet New Hampshire parking lot. The original Redstone was the rocket that lifted Concord-born Alan Shepard into space on 5 May 1961, making him the first American to leave the atmosphere.
The replica is painted in the same black-and-white livery as the original and stands on a launch-pad-style gantry. There is no admission charge to walk around it and read the interpretive panels; you can also go inside the Discovery Center for the full astronaut story. Worth a quick stop even if you are not visiting the museum.
