When to Go

Autumn is the season — late September through mid-October brings the foliage display that draws visitors to all of central New Hampshire, and Concord is a practical base. Days are crisp, nights cool, and the surrounding hills turn red and gold for two or three glorious weeks. Book lodging ahead; the I-93 corridor fills up.

Summer is mild and pleasant — daytime highs in the mid-20s Celsius — and the busiest month for the State House, the Discovery Center, and the lakes north of the city. Winter is cold and grey but rarely brutal, and the Christmas lights along Main Street and the skating rink in White Park give the city an old-fashioned charm. Mud season — late March into April — is the only stretch worth avoiding.
