Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

World's largest collection of O'Keeffe's New Mexico work

A modest single-storey museum two blocks west of the Plaza, dedicated entirely to Georgia O'Keeffe — the painter most associated with the New Mexican landscape. The rotating exhibitions draw from a collection of around 3,000 pieces and pair her paintings with photographs, sketches, and personal materials.

The museum is small enough to absorb in an hour and a half. For a deeper engagement, book one of the day trips to her Abiquiú home (about an hour north), which the museum runs in summer. Closed some Wednesdays.

A story
O'Keeffe first came to New Mexico in 1929 and was so transfixed she returned every year until she moved here permanently in 1949. She lived for the rest of her life at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú, painting the bleached bones, hills, and adobe forms of the high desert. The museum holds about 3,000 of her works.
