Santa Fe sits at 2,100 metres, which gives it a four-season climate with a Southwestern accent. Summer (June to August) is the peak — warm 25-30°C days, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms (the "monsoon" arrives in July), and the heart of the cultural season: the Santa Fe Opera, Chamber Music Festival, Indian Market in August, and Spanish Market in late July. Hotels are expensive and book out weeks ahead.
Autumn (September to October) is the connoisseur's choice. The aspens turn gold in the surrounding mountains, the air is sharp, and the city is less crowded.
Winter (December to February) brings cold nights, regular snow, and good skiing 16 miles up the mountain at Ski Santa Fe. The Christmas farolitos along Canyon Road and the Plaza are among the most magical evenings in the American Southwest.
Spring (March to May) is windy and unpredictable but quiet, with good prices. Expect everything from snow squalls to 25°C days within a single week.
